CHAPTER 20

I turned around. “Swear what?”

He raised his left hand and made the sign of a magician’s vow. “That Lady Birdsong ordered me and my team to ambush you and try to make it look like it was unavoidable. That I’ll never raise a hand against you or yours in this life, on my soul and magic. That if you heal my arm, I’ll do everything in my power to promote your interests.”

“You didn’t have to add that last part,” said Sir Derrick.

“You were designated as a secondary target,” the sniper said to Derrick. “I want Luna to know that if anything happens to you, it wasn’t me.”

I stared at Derrick. “Looks like you have some housecleaning to do.”

With a bitter snarl, Derrick replied, “She’s much higher in the royal family than me. She has powerful allies.” Finding out you’re the target tends to bring out the worst in people.

I came to stand beside the sniper and held my hand up to swear. “I accept your bargain. If Albion agrees, I will do everything in my power to restore your arm to full functionality. Are you ready?”

He nodded and I knelt beside him again. In the background, Destinie whispered, “Who the hell is Albion?”

“The spirit of Great Britain. Mike, Destinie, make sure I’m not disturbed.”

Unlike when I worked with Manny, I couldn’t set a circle. There was too much chance of someone breaking it while I was working, and an interruption would be fatal for the patient. Instead, I depended on Manny, Mike, and Destinie to ward off disturbances.

“Albion!” I cried, “I wish to heal your subject. May I proceed?” Unlike the minor healing of a cracked jaw and a split tongue, rebuilding an arm would require expending a lot of magical energy. Throwing that much energy around would raise alarms in the spirit world.

Did I really have to get permission from the spirit of England to perform my healing? Who knew, but it worked in Thailand. Did the spirit of England even exist? I didn’t know. But it was my belief, and belief is ninety percent of magic. I decided to just go with what felt right.

Even though I didn’t receive an answer, I nodded and said, “Thank you, Lord Albion.” Sometimes magicians do crazy things to throw other magicians off.

Instead of modeling his repairs on my arm, I mirrored his left arm. That might result in some loss of dexterity, but it made the repairs easier. Centimeter by centimeter, I poured energy into his arm, rebuilding tissues and bones. Mike had done a tremendous amount of damage, damage that I now had to meticulously correct.

Thirty minutes later, it was done.

I stood and motioned him to stand. “On your feet, soldier.”

He took a moment to stand, still cradling his right arm, even though it had been restored to normal. Sometimes the memory of pain is enough to cause doubt. He carefully straightened his arm and made a fist.

“Thank you,” he said. “I thought I would never use this arm again.
